2014 Wrap Up Show

As 2014 comes to a close, I would like to thank you all for all the support and encouragement that you have given me this past year.  I reached quite a few milestones.  I wanted to hit 10,000 subscribers and I now have over 12,000.  I wanted to get to 500,000 views and I have over 622,000!  I still can't believe that this many people are actually interested in watching me make my simple projects.

I also started a second channel called Fun With Vlogging where I post weekly updates every Monday morning about my projects and daily life events.  It has grown to 400 subscribers and over 20,000 views since August.  You can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/user/FunWithVlogging

I am very excited to head into 2015 and have several projects already planned but I am always open to new ideas.  If there are any projects that you would like to see me make please post them in the comments below.

As always, thanks for watching and I'll see you next time.

Project - Building a custom fit wood gift box without measuring

4 days before Christmas I decided to make a custom fit box for the present that I had bought for my family's gift exchange.  The challenge that I made to myself was to build it without using a tape measure.  By shear chance it was picked and opened by the first person at the gift exchange.  By the time that we had reached person number 5 out of 14 it had already been stolen twice and was out of the running.  It is always a good feeling to know that your work is appreciated.

What's in the box?

I currently have the 1/4" blade on my band saw that came with it when I bought it.  I have been meaning forever to buy a better one for re-sawing.  I had followed a link to Woodcraft the other day so I did a search for 70 1/2" blades and this is what I found.  http://www.woodcraft.com/search2/search.aspx?query=bandsaw%20blades&Length=70-1/2%22

From everything that I have read and heard you want a lower tooth count for re-sawing so the 1/2" blade looked perfect!  I went ahead an picked up the 1/8" blade too while I was there.  They showed up tonight so I plan on giving them a test this weekend on my Craftsman 1/3 hp 3.5 amp 10" Band Saw (21400).  I'll write another article when I get the chance to test them out.  In the mean time here is a quick look at them.

Finishing an Ice Chest Cooler Box made with a little bit of red cedar

It rained most of the weekend so I wasn't able to work on the coffee table that I had planned on so I put a finish on the Ice Chest Cooler Box that I made last month for the baby shower.  The red had darkened with age so I gave it a quick sand with 120 grit sandpaper before putting on 2 coats of indoor\outdoor spar urethane.

Please leave a comment below and let me know what you think of the finished product!

Stanley Mitre Box No. 358

I recently picked up an antique Stanley Mitre Box no. 358 with an Atkins back saw from a friend at work.  It used to belong to his dad and he found it in a shelf in his garage a couple of months ago.  I think that this thing is really, really neat and I plan on cleaning it up and trying it out.  Does anybody out there know of a good cleaner that I can use on this with out messing up the patina?  I want it functional and clean looking but I don't want to lose any of it's rustic charm.

L shaped garden bench

Somebody on Youtube asked me how I would design an "L" shaped garden bench.  Here is my first idea.  I have a couple of other ideas in my head and I will sketch them out when I have time.

Staining an ice chest cooler box

I am building a stained ice chest cooler box for a customer. I had some min wax walnut stain that was a little darker than I wanted so I watered it down with some mineral spirits and made the color that I was looking for.

Kreg Foreman Pocket-Hole Machine (Item# DB210)

This looks like a totally cool pocket hole machine and I would love to get one but I don't know if I would have the room for it or the budget.  Maybe I can afford one when my YouTube channel blows up, lol.

You can read more about it here: https://www.kregtool.com/store/c26/pocket-hole-machinery/p322/foreman-pocket-hole-machine/

My next project - a stand for a 20 gallon aquarium

My sister is upgrading the tank for her turtles to a 20 gallon and asked me to make a stand for it.  She wants a lip on top so her kids can't easily pull or push it off and she wants it sturdy.

The new tank is going to be 30" long by 12" wide by 12" tall so I am designing it to be 30 1/4" long by 12 1/4" wide so there is a little wiggle room to get the tank in and out.  I am making the basic frame out of 2x4's and then I am going to cover it with 3/4" pine.  The 2x4's are going to go together with half lap joints and the pine will be glued and nailed onto the 2x4 frame.  I believe that I should be able to make it out of 4 - 2x4x8's, 3 - 1x8x6's, 5 - 1x6x5's and half a sheet of 1/2" plywood.

Here is what I came up with in Sketchup.

Here's a quick update on the planter box.

The planter box has been on my front porch for about 10 months now and is still going strong!  My wife didn't like the flowers that I had in it so she and her sister planted some new ones about a month ago.

Garden Bench update - sanding and spar urethane

I sanded the top, bottom, and legs with 60 grit and then sanded the top to 120 this afternoon.  I would say it took about 90 minutes total.  I then blew it off with my compressor and wiped it down really good.  I then put first coat of Outdoor Spar Urethane on and I am very happy with how it came out.  I plan on putting one more coat on later tonight and 1 or 2 more coats tomorrow.  Once that all dries then I will mask it off and paint the legs during the week.

Can you tell which side is sanded?
